When is “traditional” a bad thing?

There are far too many choices in our lives…

Too many brands of soft drinks to choose from.

Too many types of washing powder.

Too many types of mobile phone.

As a result we resort to tradition, which means we revert to doing what we have always done because it is easier and more importantly it feels safer. But should we really be buying products or services on the basis of “better the devil you know”?

Henry Ford famously said “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

We are seldom presented with new ideas which are worse (in whatever context) than something that is already in the marketplace. People create wonderful new ideas which will benefit us but we ignore them because of tradition so they fail and then we can say “I knew that wouldn’t work”. We should be supporting innovation and change because the fact is there are more products and more services which are better than they ever were before. We can buy better food, get better medicines, call longer distances, get more “content” or information of value than ever before. You name it, almost everything is better than it used to be. Yes, I know, you can always find something that’s “not as well made as when I was a lad…”. But seriously…

Those companies that innovate make things better, quicker, better value and make fewer mistakes than those who have stayed wedged in the past. These companies claim to be traditional but are hiding in the past and relying on the apathy or perhaps fear of their customers.

This applies so much to the accountancy profession right now. Some accountants still prefer pen and paper. Still preferring to send in their clients’ paper tax returns to HMRC in the post. They are insisting that their clients are the ones who do not want “Making Tax Digital”. Do not want Cloud Accounting. Do not want more up to date information to enable them to run more successful businesses…. Who are they kidding?

These are the Redundant Historical Accountants who over the next few years will become dodos. The problem is their clients don’t know this yet. So when they ask about Making Tax Digital or Cloud Accounting they are told “it will never happen”, or “there’s nothing wrong with your current system, current records, etc. Let’s just stay the way we are….”

At wood and disney we prefer to be called “Real Time Accountants”.

Why?

Because we do not believe that a business owner can create a successful business if their decision making is based upon historic or out of date financial information. We passionately believe that a successful business needs a solid foundation of “Real Time Financial Information” to enable them to build a better life for themselves and their families.

We help them achieve this better life by using award winning cloud accounting systems such as Xero and Quick Books Online to provide business owners with up to date, reliable information to enable them to properly plan for growth and to make better decisions.   If they make better decisions they will get better results which gives them “choices” such as buying better equipment, employing better staff, expanding into new locations etc.

So are you proud to be traditional or are you willing to embrace something new with the potential to revolutionise your business and therefore your life?

Wood and Disney are Real Time Accountants and Business Advisers using cloud accounting as the foundation to build a better life for our clients.
